Introduction
Not all candles are made the same way. Once you understand the difference, it's hard to go back to a big box store candle. Most mass produced candles are made with paraffin wax, poured by machines in a factory, and scented with synthetic fragrance that fades within a few burns.
Hand poured soy candles are a different animal entirely. At Stars and Cents, every candle we make is poured by hand in small batches, using 100% soy wax and natural wood wicks. Here's what that actually means, how we do it, and why it matters for the candle sitting on your coffee table.
What Does "Hand Poured" Actually Mean?
It means a real person is measuring, melting, mixing, and pouring each candle instead of a machine doing it on an assembly line. It's slower and more labor intensive, but every candle gets individual attention instead of being one of ten thousand rolling off a conveyor belt.
Small batches also make quality control possible in a way factories can't match. When you're only pouring a dozen or two at a time, you catch the wick that's slightly off center or the pour that ran a little too hot before it ever leaves the workshop.
Our Process: From Wax to Jar
Melting the wax We start with 100% soy wax, a natural wax made from soybean oil rather than the petroleum used in paraffin. It's biodegradable and burns noticeably cleaner, with far less soot on your jar or walls. We melt it slowly to a specific temperature so it's stable and ready for fragrance.
Adding fragrance Once the wax hits temperature, we mix in fragrance oil at a measured ratio. Add too much and the candle can smoke or burn unevenly. Add too little and you lose the hot throw, which is the scent you actually notice once the candle is lit. This ratio is where a lot of cheaper candles cut corners, and it's one of the steps we're most particular about.
Setting the wick Before wax goes anywhere near the jar, the wick has to be centered and secured. We use natural wood wicks because they create a wider flame and that soft crackling sound as they burn. A centered wick also means the wax melts evenly from edge to edge instead of tunneling down the middle.
The pour This is the step that gives these candles their name. Every jar is filled by hand, at the right temperature, one batch at a time. Pour too hot or too fast and you risk frosting, sinkholes, or an uneven top. Doing it by hand means we can control all of that, jar by jar, instead of trusting a machine to get it right.
Curing After the pour, the candle needs to sit untouched for one to two weeks so the wax and fragrance oil fully bond. This step gets skipped a lot in cheaper candles, which is usually why they smell weak right out of the box. Waiting it out makes a real difference in how strong the scent throw is once you finally light it.
Quality check and finishing Once cured, we check every candle for a clean pour, a centered wick, and a proper burn. Then it gets trimmed, labeled, and packaged.
Why Soy Wax Specifically
A few reasons soy wax has become the standard for hand poured candles:
Cleaner burn. Soy wax produces far less soot than paraffin, so you're not left with black residue on your jar or ceiling.
Longer burn time. Soy burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which stretches the burn time out. Our 7 oz candles run about 35 to 45 hours with proper care.
Better scent throw. Soy holds fragrance well, especially paired with a wood wick that creates a wider melt pool.
Renewable and biodegradable. Soy comes from soybeans, a renewable crop, unlike paraffin, which comes from petroleum.
Getting the Most Out of Your Candle
A few things that make a real difference in burn quality:
Trim the wick to about 1/8 inch before every burn. Let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar on the first burn so it doesn't tunnel later. Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Keep it away from drafts, vents, or fans. Put the lid back on when it's not burning to protect the scent. Always burn on a flat, heat safe surface.
